Tooth loss is a common problem in the United States. Approximately 178 million Americans are missing at least one tooth while 40 million are missing all of their teeth. The good news is that losing teeth no longer means that you need to go the rest of your life without them. There are numerous tooth replacement options out there. Dental implants are a preferred option because of their numerous benefits, but not everyone is ready for them right away. Many patients end up needing a bone graft beforehand. Here is everything you need to know.

What’s a Bone Graft?

A bone graft is a procedure that is done to place fresh bone substitutes of bone into the spaces around bone defects. Typically, the dentist will take bone from another part of a patient’s body, usually in the mouth. An incision is made where the bone is placed. Over the next few months, the new bone integrates with the existing bone as the new cells grow together.

Why Is a Bone Graft Necessary?

When you have suffered from tooth loss, experienced tooth damage, or suffered trauma in your mouth, it may be necessary for a bone graft to be completed before moving forward. This is because dental implants need a strong, supportive foundation in order to be successful, and that means a sufficient jawbone. If you don’t have sufficient, healthy bone tissue in the area of your missing tooth, you won’t be able to support a new dental implant.

Tips for Bone Graft Recovery

Here are some helpful tips for when you are recovering from your bone graft procedure:

  • Eliminate bleeding: Some bleeding is normal after your procedure. To reduce this, keep a gauze pad over the surgical site and bite for about an hour.
  • Reduce inflammation: You might experience swelling in the area. Try placing a cold compress on your cheek on the side where you had the bone graft. Cool the area in 30-minute intervals for the first 24 to 48 hours.
  • Take medications: Take all recommended over-the-counter and prescribed medications as directed.
  • Eat carefully: Drink plenty of liquids, and eat soft foods. Avoid the use of straws.
  • Rest: Be sure that you’re getting plenty of rest.

To give your dental implants the best chance of success, a bone graft may be necessary. With a little bit of time and patience, and by following the tips listed above, you will have your smile back in no time!
