Why did you decide to become a dentist?
“I have always loved working with my hands and knew I wanted my work to positively impact people. Dentistry is the perfect intersection of my interests. I grew up very self-conscious about my smile. I never smiled showing my teeth. I got orthognathic (corrective jaw) surgery and braces during dental school to fix my bite, so I personally understand the fear of dental procedures, but also the power that transforming the smile can have on someone’s life.”
Where did you study dentistry?
“After graduating UCLA, I was a dental assistant and worked at a private practice and also at the West LA VA Hospital before going to dental school at the New York University College of Dentistry. Since graduating, I have taken quite a few continuing education classes in a variety of disciplines. I have achieved fellowship status with the Academy of General Dentistry. The AGD Fellowship Award is presented to dentists who seek to provide the highest quality dental care by remaining current in their profession. To achieve this distinction, I completed over 500 hours of dental continuing education, passed a comprehensive written exam, and fulfilled three years of continuous membership with the AGD. I am working on my mastership with the AGD right now. I have also completed nearly 1,000 hours of training in implantology and obtained a Fellowship in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists.”
Dr. Kung is currently a member of the American Dental Association and Texas Dental Association, and while in dental school, he was a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and American Academy of Prosthodontics. He attended the AAP’s annual meeting his senior year and won a case presentation contest for his pre-doctorate degree, which led him to being featured in his dental school’s publication.
