Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids

Your child’s first visit to the dentist should be sometime after their first tooth erupts but before their first birthday. After that, it’s generally recommended that you bring them in for an examination and cleaning every six months. Since positive dental experiences early in life can encourage children to seek care on their own once they grow up, we’ll make sure that each visit is one they can walk away from smiling brightly and proudly.

Dental Sealants

Teaching your child to brush and floss well is vital, of course, but while they’re learning they may need an extra safety net to keep their molars and premolars clean. Applying a thin protective coating called a dental sealant to these teeth will help prevent bacteria and food particles from becoming trapped in the various nooks and crannies they contain. It has been found that children with sealants are 80% less likely to suffer from cavities in their molars.

Fluoride Treatments

If you want to keep your children safe from tooth decay, it’s important for them to be exposed to fluoride early on. Fluoride works to strengthen teeth and fight against oral bacteria, making it a key mineral in preventing cavities. A professional fluoride treatment can be done very quickly during your child’s checkup every 6 months. We simply apply the fluoride directly to the teeth in a concentrated form, such as a foam or varnish. Your child should avoid eating for a set amount of time after the treatment in order to give the fluoride time to take effect.

Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Fluoride is a fluoride solution designated in the use of incipient (small) carious lesions or cavities. We often use a child to help arrest the cavity process until the child can have the tooth restored. The application process is simple and does not involve the need for an injection or drilling on the tooth. If your child needs SDF, Dr. Kung will give you some information on this product and procedure.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

When your child develops a cavity that needs to be filled, we prefer using tooth-colored composite resin to repair the damage instead of metal amalgam. Obviously, these restorations have the advantage of looking natural (so your child won’t have to worry about being teased by their peers for having metal in their mouths), but they’re also generally better for the teeth in the long run since they require the removal of less original tooth structure than amalgam.

Children’s Dentistry FAQ's

Ideally, your child should have their first dental visit within six months of their first tooth eruption or by their first birthday.
